The National Service Scheme (NSS) cell of BGU hosted a CYBER SAFETY CAMPAIGN – 2023 in the campus at Gothapatna, Bhubaneswar on 5th October 2023 from 2.30 PM to 5.30 PM in association with the Commissionerate of Police. The Cyber Rath and CYRRA-The Mascot of Cyber Safety Campaign also visited the campus. The campaign is a combined initiative of Govt. Of Odisha and the Commissionerate of Police, and led by Ms. Anjana Tudu, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Cyber Crime, Odisha. More than 250 students from different programs like MBA, BBA, BALLB, BCom, MCom, BAJMC, MAJMC, MCA, B.Sc. Data Science, and MSc. Economics attended in both offline and online modes. Ms. Lopamudra Nayak, Assistant Professor, and Convener cum Program officer-NSS gave the welcome speech and highlighted the importance of the campaign.
Shri Saumendra Kr. Priyadarshi, IPS, Police Commissioner, Bhubaneswar – Cuttack graced the occasion and delivered a special talk on “Cyber Safety and Responsible Use of Social Media.” In his address, Shri Priyadarshi highlighted different types of cyber crimes like financial fraud, identity theft, ransomware attacks, hacking, social media fraud, cyberbullying, cyberstalking, cyber extortion, online drug trafficking, etc. He also emphasized how the citizens are becoming vulnerable to such crimes, especially the youth and the senior citizens. He urged to report the cyber crime Helpline Number 1930 immediately once there is any incident occurs. He also emphasized to students about other sensitive issues like substance use and the ill effects of addiction, and suicide prevention, and sensitized the audience to take preventive measures by citing interesting and meaningful examples.
Ms. Anjana Tudu, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Cyber Crime, and other resource persons from TCS and Accenture also conducted a workshop on different aspects of cybercrime and educated students, faculties, and staff of BGU about precautionary measures to overcome such issues. Three “Cyber Mitras” were nominated by the commissionerate. They are Mr. Anup Dey, Ms. Divya Singh, and Ms. Saniya Sahu to carry forward the mission for the benefit of citizens at large. Different activities like art and poster competitions were also conducted among the students and prizes were given by the State Cyber Crime Prevention Team to the winners.
The event was also graced by Prof. (Dr.) P. P. Mathur, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) B. K. Das, Registrar, BGU. They addressed the gathering by emphasizing the bright and dark side of technology, especially the increasing incidents of cyber crimes happening because of the lack of awareness and carelessness of people and getting trapped by cyber criminals. Prof. Samson Moharana, Dean, Birla School of Commerce, and Prof. Lalit Dev, Dean, Birla School of Law, and other faculties and staffs were also present during the campaign.
NSS volunteers also mesmerized the audience by demonstrating a Nukkad Natak on how youth are trapped in different cyber offenses. Also, a welcoming Odissi dance was performed by NSS volunteer Ms. Bhumika Puranmasi.
Ms. Jyota Mukhi hosted the program as the anchor. The whole program was coordinated by NSS volunteers under the guidance of faculty members of the NSS committee - Dr. Siddharth Misra, Asst. Professor cum NSS-Program Officer (PO), Ms. Ashna Siddiqui, Academic Associate cum NSS-PO, Mr. Suresh Gole, Asst. professor, Dr. Manaswini Jena, Asst. Professor, and Mr. Yogendra Singh, Asst. Professor. Dr. Suvendu Kumar Pratihari, Asst. Professor and Coordinator, NSS-BGU gave the vote of thanks.
