The Storytellers of Tomorrow

Author: Ms. Anwesha Padhi Category: General Date: 13 Feb 2025

Stories have been an inherent part of human civilization. More than simple entertainment, stories are deeply embedded in our lineage as a community. Throughout the many decades of human existence, the value of storytelling has accentuated in all dimensions, effectively encompassing art, science, commerce and the intersections within. In today’s rapidly evolving media landscape, digital storytelling has emerged as a powerful tool for brands, educators, and content creators alike. It encompasses the creation and sharing of multimedia stories that engage and captivate audiences through various digital mediums.

What is Digital Storytelling?

Digital storytelling is an umbrella term encompassing the usage of videos, images, audio, and other interactive multimedia features to craft compelling narratives around historical and contemporary matters of interest. Storytelling enables new age communicators to convey complex ideas and emotions in a dynamic and immersive way. Digital platforms expand the reach and accessibility of such stories to a rather assorted set of audience.

Stories add depth to media texts. Any material of communication is humanized by means of strategic narratives. Digital storytelling enables brands and individuals to connect with their audience on a deeper level. By tapping into emotions and personal experiences, digital stories have the power to resonate with viewers, driving engagement and fostering brand loyalty. In an era where attention spans are dwindling, storytelling helps cut through the noise and make a lasting impression. It has revolutionized audience engagement, capturing attention and fostering a deeper connection between the storyteller and the audience.

Birla School of Communication and Digital Storytelling

Birla School of Communication prophesizes the critical importance of storytelling in the digital media. It has been the school’s primary goal to foster among its students a penchant for storytelling that could be used as a creative tool in shaping media narratives. The academics are designed to help students find the relevance of ancient communication forms in contemporary times. The school equips students with a diverse skill set essential for success in the field.

Papers such as Digital Storytelling, Screen Writing, Script Writing for Visual Media and others have been incorporated at both UG and PG levels to exclusively work on students’ understanding of narratives and training them to develop stories and narratives as per industry demands. Apart from this, students are encouraged to ideate for films, brand campaigns and news events using their creativity and narrative skills. For courses like Digital Media, Online and Convergent Media and Broadcast Communication, students are trained in writing blogs, running semester-long social media campaigns and using interactive storytelling tools to enhance their effectiveness as modern-age communicators.

Preparing for an AI-Driven World

Birla School of Communication prepares students to compete as creative human resources in an AI-driven media world. Through the various courses, the school empowers students with the analytical and evaluative skills required for creating more solution-oriented actions in both traditional and new media spaces. The potential of such relevant media pedagogy would be reflected in learners’ theoretical, digital, writing, cinematic and journalistic competencies.
