Why Should One Prefer BBA LLB Over BA LLB?

Author: Mr. Swagat Dash Category: General Date: 11 Feb 2025

The establishment of the first National Law School aimed to produce exceptional litigation professionals. However, this objective has shifted over time, as data indicates that most graduates from top-tier national law schools prefer corporate law firms to litigation careers. This trend can be attributed to several factors, primarily the high cost of legal education and the comparatively low compensation in litigation. Despite the popularity of corporate law firms among law students, they often lack the necessary business acumen to effectively handle a company's legal matters. This deficiency largely stems from the fact that most National Law Schools offer BA LLB programs, with only a few providing BBA LLB courses. Even those institutions offering BBA LLB programs frequently lack the required resources, both in terms of faculty and practical experience, to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of business, management, and accounting – crucial skills for excelling as a corporate lawyer. In contrast, multidisciplinary universities with established business schools are better positioned to provide students with top-notch faculty and exposure to the business world. To address this gap, some law schools have begun collaborating with business schools to offer joint programs or specialized courses in business law. These initiatives aim to provide law students with a more well-rounded education that combines legal expertise with business acumen. Additionally, many law firms have recognized the need for business-savvy lawyers and are investing in training programs to enhance their associates' understanding of financial concepts and corporate strategy. However, there remains a significant opportunity for legal education to evolve further, incorporating more practical business knowledge and skills into the curriculum to better prepare future corporate lawyers for the challenges they will face in their careers.

A BBA LLB degree thus significantly bridges this gap by providing students with a solid foundation in both legal and business principles. This integrated approach enables graduates to better understand the complex interplay between legal issues and business operations, making them more valuable assets to corporate law firms and their clients. Moreover, the combination of business and legal education equips students with a broader skill set, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and strategic planning abilities, which are essential for success in the corporate legal landscape. Opting for a BA LLB program doesn't preclude you from pursuing a career as a corporate lawyer; however, selecting a BBA LLB program may provide a more straightforward path towards that goal.
